Clearly, many restaurants have recognized that there is a market for vegetarian food and they have added vegetarian options to their menus. Many restaurants have recognized that they may lose business if they do not provide vegetarian options to their customers. For example, if a group of eight friends plans to go to dinner and one of the friends is vegetarian, the group may forego a restaurant if it does not offer vegetarian options. This would mean the loss of eight potential customers. Carrying vegetarian options, on the other hand, could win the continued business of these and many other people. Many restaurants have recognized this. We all know fast food is not the healthiest, but sometimes there's nowhere else to go late at night when you just want a quick bite. There are several fast food chains that offer vegetarian options. Burger King sells the BK Veggie, which is available at almost every one of their restaurants. If ordered without mayonnaise, the BK Veggie is vegan. McDonalds has a McVeggie, which is not widely available. Consumers, however, should go to McDonalds and ask for the McVeggie to be placed on the menu. The McVeggie is vegan. At Denny's vegetarians may substitute any burger with a Boca Burger patty. This provides a lot of options, since Denny's has a fairly wide selection of burgers. The burgers can be eaten with a side of fries, or a side of onion rings. As far as subs go, Subway has a couple vegetarian options. The Veggie sub can be made with whole wheat bread (NOTE: Subway's whole wheat bread contains honey, which some vegans choose not to eat), fresh vegetables and olive oil and vinegar. Subway also has a veggie patty (like a meat patty without the meat). The veggie patty is not vegan, though it is vegetarian. Quiznos Subs also has a vegetarian sub. Customers have the options of veggies, mushrooms, cheese, oregano, lettuce and guacamole. The sub is toasted just like all Quiznos subs are. This sub is vegan or vegetarian with cheese. Other popular restaurant chains carry vegetarian options. Cheesecake factory, for example, has: angel hair pasta with garlic and marinara sauce, an eggplant sandwich and a portabello burger. Other options on the menu may be adapted to be vegetarian. Just talk to the server. PF Changs Chinese bistro also has several vegetarian options. They serve seasoned tofu lettuce wraps for appetizers, spring rolls (may contain eggs), coconut curry vegetable, as well as other vegetarian plates. Other than these chains, there are many other options for vegetarians at restaurants. Some of the most vegetarian friendly restaurant types include: Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Mexican and Italian. Vegetarian activists recognize the value in ordering vegetarian options from restaurants. By ordering these options, consumers are essentially showing the restaurants that there is a demand for vegetarian food. An Open Adoption

One reading, which always piques my interest, tells of Moses' mother hiding him for a few months, and then, placing him in a basket of bulrushes, and setting him afloat on the river. She knew, if she kept her baby boy, he would surely be murdered. Her surrendering of her baby was his only hope for life. As I reread this passage last night, I wondered, how different my life might have been, if my child's adoption had been an open adoption. Moses' adoption was really an open one, because of his sister's involvement. Indeed, his mother was his wet nurse! Did this knowledge and contact make it easier for his birth mother? Wondering this, I remembered that when my child was born I never saw her sweet little face. Why? Because I worried that, if I saw her, I would never be able to let her go. Still, all the worry over her well being through the years........What a relief it would have been to know that she was well, happy and loved...... Another thing I have been wondering: is Moses the first mention, of a child being surrendered by his birth mother, in the Bible? And if the Pharaoh's daughter had not rescued Moses, who else could have? Would he not have been murdered anyway, had anyone else found him? If this is so, did Moses' mother know that the Pharaoh's daughter would be visiting the area where she placed Moses? Was this young woman, in particular, the only hope for Moses and his birth mother? One final pondering of mine: While this appears to be an open adoption from the birth mother's side, what about the adoptive mother, the Pharaoh's daughter? Could she have been so naive that she never figured this one out? And Moses? When did he become aware of who his birth mother was? What was his relationship with each of his mothers? Just how truly open was this adoption? Well, perhaps my own firstborn child's history is enough of a mystery for me. How To Distort Drug Research

Maybe some of it is. But the Guardian newspaper recently reported on many systematic reviews which demonstrate that pharmaceutical industry studies show positive results far more often than those funded by independent sources. Is this coincidence? Do they just happen to get more of the results that they want? It seems improbable. But it's not likely that drug companies directly tamper with clinical drug trials in any criminal way. Nor are they likely to change the reported results afterwards either. That kind of blatant dishonesty is probably very rare in drug research, because it isn't necessary. The drug companies have more subtle ways to get the results they are hoping for. To begin with, a company can design a study in a biased way. A simple example: even if a study is theoretically double-blind, a company could create procedures which let doctors administering a new pharmaceutical know who is getting it, versus who is getting a placebo instead. Just the expectation of doctors that a patient's condition will improve often results in more reported improvement. It's a fairly crude manipulation, but there are certainly other ways to design a study to increase the chance of positive results being shown. Perhaps the most common way to manipulate the results of drug research, is to selectively report those results. Several recent investigations show that this is common. Data that doesn't support the conclusions the companies want is often hidden or thrown out. Why does this matter? Suppose a new drug is given to ten groups of people who share a given disease or condition. Now suppose that on average, the people in five of the groups have good results, but the subjects in the other five groups get worse or have no improvement. People often get better or worse for many reasons, so this is common. It is why many trials are necessary to have statistically significant results. What if in this case, the company decided that only the five trials with positive results are important enough to report, and they quietly get rid of the data from the others. A drug that has no real benefit on average now appears to have helped in every research trial - at least all those that the rest of the world hears about. It is bad science, of course, but unfortunately it is just one of the ways that pharmaceutical companies play with data to get the results they want to see. Scientists have been recommending a simple and inexpensive solution to this problem for decades: a compulsory international trials register. If companies want to use the results of any drug research trials to get a new pharmaceutical approved, they would have to register the trial before it begins. With this simple registry, trials that don't give the result wanted can't just disappear - they have to all be accounted for. Of course the drug companies are fighting against this simple idea. Federal Job Search Strategies: 7 Tips to Help You Succeed

By Sean Dunagan Despite constant calls by politicians and policy makers to reign in government spending, the federal government remains the largest employer in the United States. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, there are currently more than 2,700,000 employees working for the federal government in civil service positions. For nearly every federal job vacancy, the number of applicants exceeds the number of available positions by at least tenfold. Why do so many Americans aspire to a federal job? The answers are diverse. Some consider it a patriotic duty, while for others its an act of enlightened self-interest. Whatever your motivation, however, the benefits are significant. Simply put, Uncle Sam is an excellent boss. Working for the federal government offers employment stability that cannot be replicated in the private sector. Once a new employee completes a predetermined probationary period (usually 1 year), lifetime employment is nearly guaranteed. Laws and regulations governing federal personnel practices make it extremely difficult to fire, lay-off, or forcibly transfer most employees. On the rare occasions when lay-offs do occur, displaced employees are given very preferential hiring treatment for similar positions that becomes available. The result is that very few federal employees have ever missed a day of work due to a lay-off. Fringe benefits, including an excellent retirement package, are also a major motivating factor. Health benefits for federal employees are generally better than those offered in the private sector, and the government currently picks up more of the premium costs than most private employers. For an employee enrolled in Blue Cross/Blue Shields family coverage, for instance, the government currently pays $578 of the $771 monthly premium. Retirement benefits are based on a complicated formula that incorporates the employees salary, years of service and retirement age, but independent studies consistently determine that the plan is more generous than nearly all private sector employers. Federal salaries are competitive as well. In 2005, the average salary for all federal workers worldwide is $60,203. Due to the salary structure and political realities, raises are virtually guaranteed every year. In January 2005, the raise was set at 3.5%. In addition, salary adjustments are made for employees in major metropolitan areas. Federal service also provides far more opportunity for advancement than most other employers. At the senior management level (known as the Senior Executive Service, or SES), salaries range from $107,550 to $162,100. There are currently approximately 7,000 SES employees in federal service. With all of these benefits, its no wonder that many job seekers are trying to land a position with the federal government. While the competition is fierce, here are some key strategies that can help you in your search: 1. Check the governments official employment web site (http://www.usajobs.opm.gov) often. Virtually every federal job vacancy is listed there, and its updated every day. Most vacancy announcement are only open for a period of approximately 3 to 4 weeks, and the application process can be detailed, so its best to check frequently so you can start working on your application as early as possible. 2. Avoid services that claim to help you land a federal job. Companies that guarantee you a federal job are scams, and these services cant do anything that you cant do yourself. 3. Be willing to accept a pay cut. While federal salaries are competitive, the compensation structure is such that salaries typically start low but increase quickly. Every federal job has a starting grade and a full performance grade. Typically, professional positions start at grade 7 in the federal pay scale (referred to as General Schedule-7, or GS-7), and increase to GS-9, GS-11 and GS-12 at 1-year intervals. For an employee in Washington, D.C., that would mean starting with an annual salary of $35,452 but earning $62,886 after three years of service (not counting the annual government-wide salary increases of approximately 3% per year). 4. Consider trainee positions. The term has a negative connotation, but starting in a designated trainee position can be a great way to get your foot in Uncle Sams door. These positions, which generally require no specific work experience, are typically filled at the GS-5 level ($25,000 - $30,000 per year). Because many federal jobs are only available to current or former federal employees, working as a trainee for a year or two often opens a lot of doors. 5. Read the vacancy announcement carefully. Procedures for applying for a federal job have been streamlined in recent years, but its vitally important that your follow the instructions provided to the letter. Unlike their private sector counterparts, federal hiring managers have to abide by standardized procedures without exception. For instance, they are legally prohibited from considering applications that arrive after the closing date on the vacancy announcementeven one day late. Likewise, if you dont submit the requested documentation on time (transcripts, etc), they cant collect it from you later. 6. Bulk up your resume. This may be good advice for any job hunter, but its particularly important when applying for a federal position because of the way initial GS grades (i.e., starting salaries) are determined. Many vacancy announcement can be filled at any of a few different GS grades, and the level at which a new hire is brought on board is determined by his or her years of pertinent employment history. It is a little-known secret that federal hiring managers want to start new hires at the highest grade they can justify, because by doing so they can minimize the risk of turnover. Most federal employees who leave government service before retirement do so during the first five years of their career, because starting salaries in the private sector are higher. So, how can you help your new agency pay you more? If youre in a position that makes it difficult to gain work experience in your desired field, remember that self-employment, if legitimate, counts as employment experience for federal hiring purposes. For instance, if youre a stay-at-home mother with the goal of re-entering the workforce as a writer, working from your home as a freelance writer for three years would count as work experience when you apply for that federal job. Although the competition for federal jobs can be tough, the benefits are well worth the effort.
