All About Depression

By Courtenay Cameron What is depression?
Many of us say "I'm feeling depressed" when we feel sad or miserable. But usually, these feelings pass after a while. But clinical depression is when these feelings are disabling and interfer with your life. Clinical depression can stop people from leading a normal life, it makes everything harder to do and everything may seem less worthwhile. At its most severe depression can be life-threatening, because it can make people suicidal or simply give up the will to live. How do I know if I am depressed?
You may be clinically depressed if you have most of the following symptoms:

depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day, that may be noticed by others.
Loss of interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day, nearly every day
significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain or decrease or increase in appetite nearly every day.
insomnia or hypersomnia nearly every day
psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly every day
loss of energy nearly every day
feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt nearly every day
diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness, nearly every day
recurrent thoughts of death (not just fear of dying), recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or a suicide attempt or a specific plan for committing suicide
What types of depression are there?

General Depression
People who suffer from general depression still have most of the major signs and symptoms of depression as discussed above. Depression can very from mild to moderate to sever (which is sometimes called major depression).
Seasonal affective disorder
This happens when someone becomes depressed only during the autumn and winter, and it is caused by not getting enough daylight.
Postnatal depression
Also known as "the baby blues". This is a depression that occurs after the birth of their baby and can appear any time between two weeks and two years after the birth.
Manic depression
Also known as Bipolar Disorder. Some people have mood swings, with periods of depression that then change into periods of mania. Mania is a state of high excitement, and peope who are manic may plan or believe lofty schemes and ideas.
What causes depression?
There's no one cause of depression; it varies from person to person and can happen for a combination of factors. Although depression there has been not enough evidence to believe that is is something inherited in the genes, some of us are more prone to depression than others. Some factors that could cause depression include:

the way we're made
our experiences
family background.
traumatic life events
poor coping strategies
after a loss of some sort (loved one, job, house etc)
life changes
inability to adapt
physical illness
poor diet and lifestyle
chemical imbalances
What can you do to help yourself?
Remember that depression can feed on itself. In other words, you get depressed and then you get more depressed about being depressed. An important thing to remember is that there are no instant solutions to problems in life. Solving problems involves time, energy and work. Here are some things you can do to try and break the hold of low moods:

Make an effort to be more aware of how you talk and think to yourself. Listen to yourself in your head.
Every time something negative crops up, quickly scrap that thought and think of something kinder, more encouraging things to say to yourself. For instance, when you have to do something, if you always say to yourself, Youre sure to fail. You always make a mess of everything you do try to delete those thoughts and replace it with something like: Youre going to do the best you possibly can.
Look for things to do that occupy your mind.
Although you may not feel like it, its very therapeutic to take part in physical activities, for 20 minutes a day. This can stimulate chemicals in the brain called endorphins, which can help you to feel better.
Try doing things that will improve the way you feel about yourself. Allow yourself treats. Pay attention to your personal appearance. Set yourself daily or weekly goals that you can achieve. Look after yourself by eating healthily.
Try some alternative therapies such as acupuncture, massage, homeopathy and herbal medicine. St John's Wort is one of the herbal remedies that have become very popular, and may help to lift your mood. But if you are already taking other medication, it may not be safe to combine them. Consult your pharmacist or GP for more information.
It can be a great relief to meet and share experiences with other people who are going through the same thing you are. It can break down isolation and can show you how other people have coped and that is how SpeakOut and support groups can help.
Remember to try and value and accept yourself. If youve spent most of your life believing that youre unacceptable and of little value, its hard to change yourself for the better, because all your ideas and ways of behaving are based on that assumption.
Question the assumptions on which you base your ideas. Is it really true that everybody in the whole world hates you, or that everything youve ever done has turned out badly? Is it really true that you have nothing worthwhile in your life?
Try to remember how you came to think and feel this way.
Writing these things down puts what youre thinking and feeling outside of yourself, and you can see it more clearly. Books can be helpful. Try reading, not just self-help books, but well-written novels, poetry and biography.
Talk about these things to other people and find out how they see things. Talk to friends, call at a local drop-in centre, join a self-help group. Talking to a therapist or counsellor can be very helpful.
What can you do if you think you need more help?
If you find your depression is effecting your daily functioning and has been present for a length of time now, it may be worth seeking the advice of your local doctor. Also if you have been going through a lengthy period of consecutive suicidal thoughts then it may be a good idea to seek out some reassuring aid from your local doctor if you havent already. 4 out of 10 appointments at G.P. surgerys are on the concerns of a persons mental and emotional well-being, so theres no need to feel like your the only one. Here are some of the things the doctor can offer:
Antidepressants - These are drugs which work on chemical messengers in the brain to lift your mood. It often takes between 2-4 weeks before the drugs take effect. The usual recommendation is that you stay on them for six months.
Psychological treatments - This is things like therapy and counselling. Many people find it helpful to talk about their difficulties to someone who is trained in listening skills. The therapist or counsellor can also help you to put your problems in perspective and to develop new coping and problem solving strategies.
Befriending schemes - Your doctor may put you in touch with a local befriending scheme this will lead to trained volunteers visiting you regularly to give you practical advice, support and a sympathetic ear.
Support groups - This is when you meet up and talk with other people who are feeling the same way as you and share your experiences. This can be helpful to discover what works for other people and how other people cope.
What if the depression gets worse?
If you are severely depressed then you may need more intensive aid. Your doctor may refer you to a psychologist, psychiatrist or mental health nurse. The sort of services that you may be on offer for you include:

Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) - These are often the most easily accessible service for people with mental health problems. They can provide support for people living in their own homes. The CMHTs include a psychiatrist, community psychiatric nurses (CPNs), social workers and support workers etc. These professionals will visit you at your own home or refer you to Day Hospitals or Day centres where you spend the day but return home afterwards.
Crisis resolution services - These are teams of doctors and nurses who provide support during crisis situations, and will help you to stay at home if you're in crisis, rather than go into hospital.
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) - This is a controversial treatment, that is only offered when people who are severely depressed and have not responded to any other treatment. It involves passing an electric current through the brain, while you are under general anaesthetic. Ive witnessed this being done several times and in my opinion it sounds worse than it really is.
Hospital admission - If you are severely depressed and are a significant risk to yourself or others you may need the shelter and security of a ward hospital. It also gives a chance for the health professionals to monitor the effects of different treatments. Hospital can provide a safe, supportive environment if you are in a state of distress. Generally however doctors want to avoid placing people in hospital, but some patients are compulsorily detained if they are a dangerous risk to others or themselves.

Nature's Bee Pollen From New Zealand

By John Gibb Man has long known the benefits of natural bee pollen from New Zealand; however, its only been in the past few decades that we can truly appreciate its affects in our daily lives. The perks of bee pollen include a variety of vitamins, necessary enzymes, minerals and proteins including amino acids. If only each person who lived on Earth knew that bee pollen is the only known substance that has every essential vitamin, mineral, enzyme, and/or amino acids, to satisfy perfect health. That is quite an accomplishment for such a little animal! Collection of Natures Bee Pollen From New Zealand The collecting of bee pollen has been taking place for hundreds of years using just about as many methods as places to collect it. New Zealand bee pollen can be found in hives, on actual bees, and even in the honey produced by honeybees. Where one collects his bee pollen is the most important decision one can make in the location. We live in times of vast and widespread airborne pollutions and this affects the quality of bee pollen especially in the consumption by humans. If the bee pollen is collected outside a metropolitan area that is largely known for industry, you can imagine the trace amounts of other chemicals and even heavy metals found in that bee pollen. The collection of natures bee pollen from New Zealand is rare and pure in that there isnt a lot of industry and population, which eliminates pollution. The best bee pollen is New Zealand bee pollen The highest-grade quality bee pollen is harvested from the northwest geographical area on the south island of New Zealand. The population there is extremely light and there is virtually no industry to add pollutants to the bee pollen. When finding bee pollen supplements to ingest, make sure you watch that they are harvested somewhere clean and relatively low in industry. New Zealand would be the perfect area and you could purchase your bee pollen supplement and be confident that you are not ingesting any unnecessary toxins or heavy metals. Where can you purchase New Zealand bee pollen supplements? You can purchase New Zealand bee pollen supplements in any health food store, drug store, supplement store, or internet dispensers. However, select few of these are harvested in a clean atmosphere so please research where your choice supplement has been collected. A lot of these cheaper supplements have been found to contain traces of heavy metals and toxins from our environment and its important not to add any more of these into our systems. A lot of supplement companies also extract the bee pollen with methods such as supercritical C02 extraction, which can be harmful to the bee pollen and leave you without the wanted effects you desire. Remember in selecting your bee pollen preference, to keep in mind that New Zealand bee pollen is of the highest, cleanest bee pollen today. The product we personally use, located in the pristine source of New Zealand, is the most natural bee pollen source we have come across - http://www.bee-health-product.com We have been using this supplement for over 3 years with excellent health results. We have achieved a general sense of well being and new improved energy levels. We highly recommend you check out our bee pollen supplement of choice for further information. People Search - How to Find Anyone in the World

By Amit Mehta Whether you are trying to complete your family tree or would like to get in touch with a long lost classmate from elementary school, an online people search is the best way to go about it. Although plowing through hundreds (or even thousands) of records may seem daunting at first, the rewards of a people search, once successful, are truly fulfilling. (Besides, think of how much more difficult it will be if you had to conduct a manual search!) Why Do A People Search?

Conducting a people search could be for any number of reasons. Some people have used online people search facilities to look for a parent, child or sibling they have never met due to adoption, war and others. For some individuals, a people search is also one of the best ways to do some networking. You can build connections with other people based on mutual acquaintances or similar hobbies and interests. You can also use these newfound connections to further specific goals and aspirations that you may have. If you just met someone new, running a people search on them could also give you an idea of what they are like based on their background. This is especially helpful for employers who are trying to get information on job applicants and for entrepreneurs who are entering business ventures with new partners. People Search - There's Nothing Faster Than an Online Search
Conducting an online people search is probably the most practical and efficient way to go about it in a world that has become increasingly connected through the Internet. Knowing a few simple details about the person you are looking for is the best way to start; it can be an old address, phone number or simply a general idea of where this person used to live. An online people search is the fastest method because you will not have to look through outdated records located in far flung places. It's also the most cost-effective as you don't need to travel nor deal with any private detectives. There might be a lot of restrictions to accessing data is stored in libraries, clubs, government offices and other similar institutions but an online people search is usually free for all. Furthermore, you can conduct your search in complete anonymity so you don't even have to offer an reason or excuse to conduct any particular search. The technology of an online people search also allows you a lot of freedom to filter your search and make it as specific as it needs to be. This saves you a lot of time from chasing after false leads or having to read tediously through pages of documents. There are a myriad of people search websites on the Internet today, some even tailor-made for specific purposes such as looking for a military buddy or an old friend from church. As such , that long-anticipated reunion of yours could turn out to be sooner than you think. Want to Know the Top Sites for People Search? For a Healthy Greenhouse Supply Good Air Ventilation

By Matthew Martins For optimal functioning of your greenhouse, supply sufficient air ventilation at all times. The air inside a greenhouse is heated by re-radiation of solar energy by objects inside the greenhouse, or, sometimes, by means of artificial heating. It may reach a point where the temperature inside the greenhouse grows uncomfortably high for the plants. If this happens, you need to implement a good greenhouse ventilation system to exchange some of the warm air inside for cooler air from outside. Because warm air rises, it is convenient to allow it to escape through vents at the highest point of the greenhouse. Cool air can gain access through natural means - for instance, leaks where glass overlaps - or through side vents set lower down in the sides of the greenhouse. It's especially important to provide lean-to or circular greenhouses, or greenhouses used to grow alpine plants, with an adequate fresh air supply. A rule of thumb for small greenhouses is that the vents should be equal to 25 - 30 percent of the floor area. It's best to have an automated system to control the opening and closing of vents. This can be achieved by thermostatically controlled electric motors, or, on a smaller scale, by expansion vent units. Roof vents are best positioned alternately on both sides of the roof, with side vents set to match. Don't forget - if side vents are placed at ground level, you need to cover them with wire netting to prevent unwanted guests like mice or cats from gaining access to the greenhouse. To prevent cold or wet spots, circulating fans can be used to mix the air inside the greenhouse. Extractor fans will pull air out of the greenhouse, and you obviously need a means of allowing fresh air in to replace the lost air. It's possible to use fans to pull air into a greenhouse, but, in practice, extractor fans work more reliably. Air vents are the normally preferred means of allowing air in. Extractor fans are controlled by an air thermostat - and they must be large enough to move sufficient quantities of air. A good greenhouse supply retailer should be able to recommend the best type of fan for your requirements. Normal domestic extractor fans are not suitable - those used in greenhouses have larger blades which turn more slowly. Moisture jets or absorbent pads can be used alongside fans to add or remove moisture from the incoming air to help maintain the correct humidity level in the greenhouse atmosphere. With a little planning and forethought it's quite easy to maintain a good greenhouse supply of fresh air to keep your plants happy! Mulch Your Spring Bulbs In The Fall For A Beautiful Spring Display

By Michael J. McGroarty Flower bulbs need a good, long, winters sleep. Like some people we know, if they wake up before they are fully rested, they get kind of cranky, and then they dont bloom well at all. Actually what happens is during a mild winter, the soil stays too warm, and the bulbs begin to come out of dormancy early. They start to grow, and once the tips emerge above the soil line, they are subject to freezing if the temperatures dip back down below freezing. And thats usually what happens. After the bulbs have emerged, they freeze and then dont bloom at all, or if they do its a very sad display. Another reason this happens is because the bulbs are not planted deep enough. They may have been deep enough when you planted them, but as the soil goes through the freezing and thawing process, the bulbs can actually work their way up in the ground. One way to keep your flower bulbs sleeping longer, which will protect them from freezing, is to mulch the bed. In the fall just apply a 3-4 layer of well composted mulch. This layer of mulch will do a couple of things. It will maintain a higher moisture content in the soil, which is good, as long as the soil isnt too soggy. Well composted mulch also adds valuable organic matter to the planting bed. Organic matter makes a great natural fertilizer. A 3-4 layer of mulch also acts as an insulator. It will keep the soil from freezing for a while, which is good because you dont want the bulbs going through a series of short cycles of freezing and thawing. Then when the temperatures drop below freezing and stay there for a while, the soil does eventually freeze. Then the mulch actually works in reverse and keeps the soil from thawing out too early. Keeping it in a frozen state is actually good because the bulbs remain dormant for a longer period of time. When they finally do wake up it is spring time, and hopefully by the time they emerge from the ground the danger of a hard freeze is past and they will not be damaged. If you can keep them from freezing, they will flower beautifully. The extra organic matter will help to nourish the bulbs when they are done blooming, and the cycle starts all over again. We also plant annual flowers in the same beds with our spring bulbs. By the time the danger of frost is past and its time to plant the annuals, the top of the bulbs have died back and are ready to be removed. The mulch that is added in the fall also helps to nourish the annual flowers, as well as improve the soil permanently. Anytime you add well composted organic matter to your planting beds, you are bound to realize multiple benefits. The key words here are "well composted". Fresh material is not good. Buying Chainsaws From Auction Sites

By Jerry Smith One source for affordable chainsaws can be on line auction sites. Often you can save quite a lot of money shopping the auction sites for a chainsaw. First, try to know what you are looking for. Research the brand and what the retail price is. Decide whether you want a gasoline or electric chainsaw and what size chainsaw you want or need. At the same time you need to be flexible. If you are looking for Brand A, but a comparable saw from Brand C is on an auction site for less money, grab it. You can really get bargains at these sites but there are a few things you need to watch. You may find a new in the box chainsaw and the starting bid is low, however it can quickly rise well above the retail price. People get caught up in the bidding and will just keep raising the ante in the quest to win. Even if you win a bid at or close to the retail price, you still have to pay shipping and there is also almost always a no return policy. If however you are not satisfied with your purchase and think you can prove they buyer deceived you, you can file a complaint with the site and they will attempt to resolve the situation. At least one of these sites has sellers that run stores on that site and some of them will allow you to return items that are unsatisfactory. We bought a factory reconditioned saw with full factory warranty at slightly below retail price. Recently we found a similar offer for a gasoline chainsaw on one of these auction sites. Keep your head, compare prices at the auction sites with retail prices and stick to what you budgeted for a chainsaw. Jerry Smith can help you. Find out how thousands of people have been helped with the advice and information.
